A majority of people in Germany support recognizing a Palestinian state, a move the federal government there rejects, according to a new poll, Haaretz reported.

The survey by the Forsa Institute for the foreign policy journal Internationale Politik found 54% of respondents favored recognition, while 31% opposed it. The poll of 1,001 people was conducted in late July.

Support was slightly higher in eastern Germany (59%) than in the west (53%), and strongest among those ages 18 to 29 (60%) and 60 and over (58%).

Recognition was backed by 85% of The Left party’s supporters, 66% of Greens and 52% of Social Democrats. Lower levels of support came from the conservative CDU/CSU (48%) and far-right AfD (45%).

Germany backs a two-state solution but says recognition should come at the end of peace talks. Nearly 150 United Nations members recognize Palestine.
