The Fresno Mission Thrift Store has fully reopened after a fire earlier this month destroyed thousands of dollars in donated goods and forced a temporary shutdown.
The fire broke out July 10 in a large donation pile in the store’s storage area on Sierra Avenue, between Blackstone Avenue and Highway 41, according to the Fresno Fire Department. Flames spread to a nearby shipping container but were contained before reaching the main building.
Matthew Dildine, CEO of Fresno Mission, said the fire caused an estimated $100,000 to $125,000 in damage — primarily to clothing that either funds the nonprofit’s services or is given directly to people in need.
Dildine said the thrift store urgently needs new clothing donations to make up for the loss.
He also urged the public to be cautious when donating items that may contain oils or flammable materials, such as garage tools or rags, and warned that certain batteries can explode when heated.
Despite the loss, Dildine said the store is now back up and running.
How to Donate Fresno’s Mission Thrift?
You can schedule a pick-up or drop off your gently used items at Mission Thrift.
They cannot accept mattresses or box springs, damaged furniture, building materials or cabinets, pianos or organs, blinds (unless metal), tires, old paint or chemicals, or car seats and cribs.
