A Southern California woman in her 40s was rescued Sunday after suffering a serious ankle injury while hiking with family on the Lewis Creek Trail near Corlieu Falls.

According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, the woman misstepped on the 3.7 mile trail and was unable to walk due to the injury.

Emergency crews, including the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team, deputies, CalFire, and Sierra Ambulance, responded to the remote location.

Given the steep terrain, officials called in helicopter support from CHP H-40. After stabilizing the injury on scene, rescuers hoisted the woman out of the canyon and flew her to the Batterson Fire Station, where an ambulance transported her to a nearby hospital.

“This is exactly why our SAR teams train year-round and work closely with partner agencies,” Sheriff Tyson Pogue said in a statement.

Authorities thanked all responding agencies for their teamwork during the rescue.
