It’s official: Horse racing is not coming back to the 2025 Big Fresno Fair.

The California Horse Racing Board has denied the fair’s request to host live horse racing in 2025, following a 4-3 vote, the fair said in a Thursday statement.

“It’s very important that Fresno maintain its race dates. We will never give up continuing this storied tradition of Fresno racing,” said John Harris, co-founder of Bernal Park Racing, LLC. “Today’s decision is not the end – we will come back again next year.”

The decision blocks plans for races on Sept. 19–21, 26–28 and Oct. 1.

The request was submitted under a proposed contract with Bernal Park Racing, LLC, a group formed to support horse racing in Fresno.

“We’re proud of the work that’s been done to identify a responsible and sustainable path forward for live horse racing in Fresno,” said Christina Estrada, CEO of The Big Fresno Fair. “While we are disappointed by today’s decision, our commitment to preserving this 140-year tradition remains strong.”

The Fair Board voted in May to pursue the 2025 dates and now plans to explore live racing opportunities for 2026.

The Starting Gate, Fresno’s satellite wagering facility, will remain open year-around, fair officials said.
