The Clovis Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location, officials announced.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a high number of impaired driving-related crashes, police said. They said the primary goal is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Corporal Mark Bradford, Traffic Supervisor said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Authorities also reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana — whether medicinal or recreational — can all impair driving and lead to a DUI arrest.
A first-time DUI conviction can result in approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, police said.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
