A 59-year-old inmate at the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Facility died Wednesday evening after being found unresponsive in his cell, authorities said.

Tulare County Sheriff’s officials said correctional deputies discovered the man during a routine safety check shortly after 6 p.m. Emergency medical services were administered at the jail before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Detectives believe the man suffered a major medical emergency. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, and notification of next of kin is underway.

The man’s identity has not been released.
