The Central Unified School District Board of Trustees has announced its intention to appoint Mark E. Marshall as the district’s next superintendent, the district announced on Monday.

The board is expected to take official action during its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 10.

U.S. News reports that Central Unified has 25 schools and more than 15,000 students. Former Clovis Unified Superintendent Eimer O’Brien has been serving as the interim superintendent since March.

Marshall currently serves as superintendent of Los Banos Unified School District, which he has led since 2017. With nearly 40 years of experience in public education, he is credited with improving academic outcomes, expanding student services, and overseeing major facility upgrades, the statement said.

Under his leadership, Los Banos Unified passed Measure X, a bond measure that funded new construction and modernization projects. The district also earned recognition for academic excellence, including a California Distinguished School award and several best elementary school rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

Marshall has secured more than $62 million in competitive grants to expand programs and support services, the statement said. He also launched a Dual Language Immersion Academy and emphasized fiscal sustainability while managing a $200 million budget for nearly 11,000 students and 1,200 employees.

He holds advanced degrees in special education and educational leadership, including a doctorate from Auburn University and has completed additional studies at UCLA Extension and Stanford University.

Central Unified’s boardmembers praised Marshall’s student-focused leadership and commitment to equity. They also thanked O’Brien for her service during the transition.

Marshall is expected to begin meeting with students, staff, and families ahead of his official start.
