The Visalia Police Department cited 55 drivers and motorcyclists during motorcycle safety enforcement operations conducted on Tuesday and Thursday, officials said Friday.

Citations were issued for a variety of violations, including cellphone use while driving, speeding, red light and stop sign violations, and driving without a valid license, police said in a statement.

The enforcement effort was aimed at improving roadway safety for motorcyclists and other drivers, according to the department.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
