The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, the department announced.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing a high number of crashes involving impaired drivers. Officials say the goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired motorists from the road.

Police reminded the public that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as marijuana — whether medicinal or recreational — can impair a person’s ability to drive and result in a DUI charge.

A first-time DUI conviction carries an average cost of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, police said.

The program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
