KMJ Radio host Ray Appleton has been out of action since April 29 with health issues. He will be gone a while longer.

“I have a rare condition called CVID. What that means is I have no immune system. I have no protections from disease and sickness, and this is why I’m always in the hospital. It’s just gotten worse, the older I get,” Appleton wrote on his Facebook page May 1.

On Monday, KMJ Program Director Blake Taylor said Appleton will return in “several weeks” without providing a specific date. The show airs Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Ray is on the mend. He’s getting better every day. He’s getting stronger every day,” Taylor said on the air. “The Ray Appleton Show will go on and continue on when Ray returns.”

Several guest hosts have filled the airtime. From now until Appleton returns, Taylor announced he will host hour one, with the syndicated “Guy Benson Show” from noon to 2 p.m.

Appleton’s son Rory Appleton — a former Fresno Bee reporter now at the Indianapolis Star — posted an update last week.

“He is doing better. He had a particularly bad bout of pneumonia and a minor heart issue, but he is on the mend. He should be out of the hospital imminently. He needs a little bit of physical therapy, so just bear with us,” Rory Appleton wrote.

ABC 30’s Willis Now in Houston

Brianna Willis

After two years, Brianna Willis has left ABC 30 for a station in Houston. However, her employer remains the same — Mickey Mouse.

Willis debuted for KTRK-TV in H-Town last month. Like ABC 30, both stations are owned and operated stations by Disney.

She  grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Pepperdine with a journalism degree. She started with KERO-TV in Bakersfield in June 2021.

There will be one familiar face at her new station. Last year, ABC 30 General Manager Michael Carr left for the same role at the Houston station.

ABC 30 is looking for a replacement, posting the job that pays up to $76,654.

KSEE 24/CBS47 Hire New News Director

Nexstar hired Andy Paras to guide its news operation at its Fresno duopoly of KSEE 24 and CBS47.

Andy Paras

Paras comes from WFFT-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a Fox affiliate owned by Allen Media Group. Previous management stops include stations in Gainesville, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina. He worked as a print reporter prior to entering television.

“He’s a proven leader with a deep understanding of how to engage modern audiences across platforms. Andy’s commitment to journalism, innovation, and team building makes him the ideal person to lead our newsroom into its next great chapter,” station Vice President and General Manager Matt Morse said in a news release.

Paras started April 28.

KMPH’s Jim De La Vega Retires

Jim De La Vega (KMPH)

Longtime KMPH Fox 26 morning anchor Jim De La Vega retired. He had been off the air for a few months, but returned recently to say goodbye.

“I really miss our viewers. I love you all,” De La Vega said.

De La Vega cited issues with blood pressure and new medication he is taking. He insisted viewers get their blood pressure checked.

“They call it the silent killer, because you can feel absolutely fine, and it can be through the roof,” De La Vega said during his final appearance.

The veteran reporter has been with the KMPH morning “Great Day” show for about 17 years, the station said.

De La Vega is also an author — writing thrillers — and announced a new three-book deal.

De La Vega is married to CBS 47 anchor Kathryn Herr.

David Taub,
Senior Reporter
Curiosity drives David Taub. The award-winning journalist might be shy, but feels mighty with a recorder in his hand. He doesn't see it his job to "hold public officials accountable," but does see it to provide readers (and voters) the information needed to make intelligent choices. Taub has been honored with several writing awards from the California News Publishers Association. He's just happy to have his stories read. Joining GV Wire in 2016, Taub covers politics, government and elections, mainly in the Fresno/Clovis area. He also writes columns about local eateries (Appetite for Fresno), pro wrestling (Off the Bottom Rope), and media (Media Man). Prior to joining the online news source, Taub worked as a radio producer for KMJ and PowerTalk 96.7 in Fresno. He also worked as an assignment editor for KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, California, and KSEE-TV in Fresno. He has also worked behind the scenes for several sports broadcasts, including the NCAA basketball tournament, and the Super Bowl. When not spending time with his family, Taub loves to officially score Fresno Grizzlies games. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Taub is a die-hard Giants and 49ers fan. He graduated from the University of Michigan with dual degrees in communications and political science. Go Blue! You can contact David at 559-492-4037 or at Send an Email
