A Fresno police officer has been arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor sexual battery following an investigation into an off-duty incident earlier this year, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

Officer Obioma Agbowo, a seven-year veteran of the department, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery, police said.

The charges stem from an incident in March involving two adult victims, according to the department.

The Fresno Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit conducted the investigation, and the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office issued a misdemeanor warrant for Agbowo’s arrest.

Agbowo has been placed on administrative leave while an internal affairs investigation is conducted, officials said.

“Immediately upon being advised of this complaint, the Fresno Police Department launched both a criminal and administrative investigation to address the allegations,” Police Chief Mindy Casto said in a statement. “We hold our personnel to the highest standards of conduct both on and off duty. When misconduct is alleged, we take action to thoroughly investigate and identify any violations of policy and law.”

No additional details were released as the investigation continues.
