The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the man as Derrick Trujillo, 23, of Fresno.

Original Story

A 23-year-old Fresno man was killed early Sunday after crashing his car while fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers at speeds reaching 150 mph, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on eastbound Highway 180 near Clovis Avenue, where officers spotted a Dodge Challenger traveling at nearly 130 mph, the CHP said.

When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated and exited at Temperance Avenue at an even higher speed.

The driver failed to navigate the offramp curve, sending the vehicle off the roadway. The car became airborne and overturned multiple times, ejecting the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, onto the southbound lanes of Temperance Avenue, officials said.

Emergency medical crews and fire personnel responded and attempted life-saving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Toxicology results are pending, and the collision remains under investigation.
