A Fresno man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a city employee with a blunt object while the victim was on the job, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Dyllan James Padavona, also known as Dyllan James Hopkins, 30, is accused of striking Timothy Smith in the back of the head in the early morning hours last Thursday while Smith was performing his Public Works duties, according to the statement.

Smith suffered significant injuries and underwent emergency surgery at Community Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Padavona was arrested later that day by Fresno police and booked into the Fresno County Jail. His bail is set at $554,000.

He faces multiple charges, including one count of attempted willful, deliberate and premeditated murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, and enhancements for causing great bodily injury and committing a crime while released on his own recognizance. If convicted, he could face a sentence of 12 years to life in prison.

At the time of the alleged attack, Padavona had multiple failures to appear on a pending felony case and additional misdemeanor warrants, officials said.
