Recent polling indicates a decline in President Donald Trump’s approval ratings as he implements new global trade policies in his second term. The Economist/YouGov poll reveals that 51% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 43% approve, resulting in a net approval of negative 8 points.
This marks a shift from two weeks prior when opinions were nearly evenly split, with 48% favorable and 49% unfavorable. Despite the dip, Trump’s current approval remains higher than some periods during his first term.
The poll’s timing coincides with Trump’s announcement of extensive tariffs on imported products, a move that has prompted retaliation from countries like China. In response to international pushback, Trump declared a 90-day pause on most tariffs for nations actively negotiating trade deals with his administration.
“Trump began his second term more popular than he was at any point during his first term,” the poll’s analysts noted in their findings. This observation underscores the fluctuating nature of public opinion throughout Trump’s presidency.
