The Silver Fire continues to burn north of Bishop, where strong winds have fueled its rapid growth to 1,250 acres with no containment, officials said Monday.

The wildfire, which started Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, has prompted evacuation orders in Laws (Inyo County), Chalfant (Mono County), and the White Mountain Estates neighborhood.

CalFire’s San Bernardino Unit is leading the response in unified command.

Firefighters are battling challenging conditions, with gusts up to 35 mph at Bishop Airport forcing some air resources to be grounded.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. PDT, with expected gusts reaching 65 mph. Officials warn the fire threatens structures, infrastructure, endangered species habitats, and cultural sites.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported, but containment efforts remain hindered by the weather. Additional ground and air resources have been deployed to slow the fire’s spread.

The cause is under investigation.
