A pedestrian using a walker was struck and killed early Saturday in a dark stretch near Clinton and Bond avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. east of Bond Street, when a westbound Toyota Avalon hit the woman in the roadway, CHP said. The driver, a 75-year-old woman, remained at the scene and called 911.

The pedestrian, identified as Maria Paredes, 74, of Fresno, by the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, died from her injuries.
Authorities said alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash.
Officials noted the area lacks streetlights due to its location in a county pocket.

“Safety starts with awareness, both on foot and behind the wheel,” said CHP Fresno Commander Capt. Ian Holguin. “Stay safe and stay alert.”
