A dispute over money between acquaintances escalated into a violent confrontation overnight, prompting the Clovis Police Department’s Tactical Operations Unit to respond.

Just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, officers were dispatched to a residence near Clovis and Shaw avenues for reports of a robbery and possible kidnapping.

Investigators later determined that the altercation stemmed from a disagreement over money owed to one of the individuals.

The situation quickly turned violent when the victim was pistol-whipped and held against their will.

Due to the severity of the incident and the criminal history of those involved, the department’s Tactical Operations Unit was called in at about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

The response team, which included SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, Tactical Dispatchers, UAV operators, and K9 units, arrested James Johnson, 46, of Clovis, and Nathan Medina, 36, of Fresno, without incident.

Both suspects were booked into Fresno County Jail on charges including robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim, an adult male, is receiving treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the incident.

Detectives recovered a handgun and additional evidence at the scene.
