A 16-year-old boy was arrested Monday after police investigated a reported shooting threat at Golden Valley High School, the Merced Police Department said in a statement.

In addition, police arrested the boy’s father after officers found unsecured guns at the family’s home.

The school staff received a report after dismissal from a concerned parent whose children overheard the suspect threatening other students, authorities said. The suspect was also believed to have had a firearm on campus.

School administrators alerted a school resource officer, prompting an investigation that led authorities to the suspect’s rural home, police said.

A search of the residence uncovered a BB gun resembling a real firearm in the juvenile’s room.

Officers also found six unsecured firearms belonging to his father, Jonathan Olvera, 35. He was arrested on child endangerment charges, authorities said.

The teen was booked into juvenile hall on charges related to criminal threats and firearm offenses.

The Merced Police Department emphasized its commitment to addressing school threats and reminded residents to secure firearms properly.
