A Visalia man was arrested Friday after allegedly beating his dog with a wooden weapon and confronting officers, the Visalia Police Department said in a statement.

Officers responded around 3 p.m. to a report of animal abuse near the intersection of Northeast Second Avenue and Granite Street, where they were shown video footage of Gerardo Angel Guzman, 29, striking his dog, according to police.

When officers attempted to contact Guzman, he barricaded himself inside his home and threatened them, police said.

He later exited the residence and tried to assault officers before being subdued and taken into custody.

Guzman was taken to Kaweah Health for medical clearance before being booked at the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Facility on multiple charges, including animal cruelty, battery on a peace officer, and resisting arrest, authorities said.

Animal Control took custody of the dog, which sustained minor injuries.
