The California Highway Patrol reported it’s investigating a fatal crash that left a 30-year-old woman dead and a 7-year-old child injured on Highway 168 on Sunday.

At 8:40 a.m, dispatch received a call about a missing driver who failed to arrive home after midnight.

The driver, later identified as a woman in a Subaru Crosstrek, was the subject of a “Be On the Lookout” alert.

Around 11:45 a.m., a child, approximately 7 years old, was found walking on the right shoulder of westbound Highway 168, east of Qualls Prather Road.

CHP officers and Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the overturned Subaru further down an embankment. The woman was found dead outside the vehicle.

It appears neither the driver nor the child was wearing seatbelts.

CHP is investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, awaiting toxicology results.

The child, who had spent nearly 12 hours at the crash site, was transported to Valley Children’s Hospital with moderate to major injuries.

He was later reunited with his father at the hospital.
