A Fresno man who caused a fatal DUI crash that killed two young victims, including a pregnant woman, was sentenced to probation Friday by Fresno County Superior Court Judge Charles J. Lee, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release.

Eugene Roebuck III, 24, avoided a maximum 12-year prison term for the September 2022 collision after pleading to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, officials said.

Roebuck’s crash occurred on northbound State Route 99 near McKinley Avenue just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 3, 2022.

Witnesses reported seeing Roebuck weaving through traffic at speeds of up to 115 mph before making an unsafe lane change, causing a collision that sent another vehicle off the road, the DA’s office said.

The car crashed into a tree, killing the driver, 20, and his pregnant passenger, 18, both of Mendota.

The California Highway Patrol determined Roebuck’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.08% two hours after the crash.

Data retrieved from his vehicle confirmed excessive speeds before the collision.

The DA’s office said that despite objections from the victims’ families and the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, Judge Lee granted probation with an additional 10-day jail sentence.

DUI-Related Fatalities Alarm the DA’s Office

The District Attorney’s Office noted an alarming increase in DUI-related fatalities in Fresno County this year, with eight deaths reported so far.

Authorities urge drivers to remember that impaired driving endangers lives and has devastating consequences.
