A man was arrested after striking two pedestrians with his vehicle shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Chestnut and Hamilton avenues, the Fresno Police Department said in a news release.

Marcelo Gaytan, 56, remained at the scene after hitting the victims, a 98-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man.

Both were transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where the woman later died.

The man, who suffered severe head, rib, and lung injuries, remains in critical condition.

Traffic officers determined Gaytan was under the influence of alcohol and booked him into Fresno County Jail, police said.

Authorities said he faces multiple felony charges, including DUI causing injury or death, gross vehicular manslaughter, and causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony.
