A traffic stop in Madera turned into an unusual arrest Monday night when a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over a speeding Rolls Royce Ghost on northbound Highway 99, north of Avenue 17, the CHP said in a statement.

The driver, whose identity has not been released, was found to be under the influence and arrested for DUI and possession of cannabis for sale, according to CHP officials.

The incident took a bizarre turn when officers discovered the driver was also in possession of a spider monkey, an exotic animal illegal to own as a pet in California.

Authorities believe the monkey, estimated to be about one month old, was being kept as a pet. Animal Control took custody of the primate.

The driver was booked into Madera County Jail and faces multiple charges, including possession of an exotic animal.
