Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

After an eventful Thanksgiving spent with family and loved ones, students’ realities are hitting when returning to campus. That’s because final exams are around the corner.

Those exams are coming on top of final projects and keeping up with assignments.

But have no fear, a finals survival guide is here!

As a senior at Fresno State, I take pride in my finals week routine. Here are some tips and tricks that work for me and other students at Fresno State.

Study Smarter, not Harder

Use strategies like the Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of focused study followed by a 5-minute break. This keeps your mind fresh and prevents burnout. Digital flashcards, study groups, and reviewing past exams are great resources.

Self Care is Key

It’s tempting to pull all-nighters, but sleep is crucial. Aim for at least 6-7 hours a night. Fuel your brain with balanced meals and stay hydrated. Coffee and Dutch Bros Rebels may seem like your best friends, but don’t rely on them for energy.

Kailey Dauderman, a senior at Fresno State says “Pace and take care of yourself.” Whether it is a power nap or a break to scroll through your Instagram reels, do it.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help!

Seohui Choi, a senior at Fresno State who also works for the university’s writing center, explained that the tutors share a strategy where they divide a to-do list into three columns: do now, later, or much later.

“Listing down their tasks step by step kind of helps students feel less overwhelmed,” Choi says.

Keep Positive Perspectives

“If you’re feeling overwhelmed, pause and breathe. Then reflect and prioritize the important tasks needed to be done and do what you can,” says Diego Mejia, a senior majoring in English studies who aspires to become a teacher.

Find Your Focus

Thalia Contreras recommends that you figure out what works best for you.

“Don’t overwork yourself, it’s totally OK to need breaks,” she said. “Whatever works for you might not work for others so don’t overwork yourself by trying to follow someone else’s advice if you realize it isn’t beneficial for you.”

Hopefully, after reading some of these tips from Fresno State seniors who have navigated finals, your nerves will calm down and you’ll confidently tackle the challenges ahead.

“Perfection isn’t key, progress is,” says Naydelin Cabrera.

Most of all, remember you’ve got this!
