Psychotherapist Amy Morin emphasizes that raising mentally strong children goes beyond telling them to “toughen up.” Instead, it’s about equipping them with skills to tackle challenges, manage emotions, and believe in themselves.
In her book “13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do,” Morin outlines 10 simple yet powerful phrases parents can use to foster resilience, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving skills in their children.
One key phrase is “What would you say to your friend who had that problem?” This encourages children to reframe negative self-talk and develop self-compassion. Another important statement is “It’s OK to feel upset, but not OK to act this way,” which validates emotions while setting behavioral boundaries.

‘Let’s Solve This Together’
Morin also suggests using phrases like “Let’s solve this together” to promote problem-solving skills, and “What can we learn from this?” to help children view setbacks as opportunities for growth.
“Acknowledging effort, rather than just results, teaches children to value perseverance over perfection,” Morin explains. She recommends saying things like “I hope you’re proud of yourself for working so hard!” to encourage self-motivation and resilience.
