A driver lost control of his vehicle on a rain-slick overpass early Tuesday, causing a fatal crash on Highway 41 near Highway 180, the CHP said in a news release.

Officers responded to reports of a collision at approximately 5:30 a.m. and discovered a 2017 Toyota Tundra in the center median of the highway.

Investigators said the Toyota, driven by Lathxay Lou Souknalong, 54, was traveling westbound on 180 during heavy rain. Souknalong lost control of the vehicle, which struck a concrete bridge wall before becoming airborne and plunging 25 to 30 feet onto 41 below.

The 47-year-old passenger, whose name has not been released, died at the scene. Souknalong sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center.

Authorities confirmed Souknalong was driving on a suspended license. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been factors in the crash, the CHP said.
