BAKERSFIELD — After a nice home win over Sacramento State to open the season followed by a competitive road loss to UC Santa Barbara, the Fresno State men’s basketball team had no gas in its tank on Saturday night in the second half.

Corey Stephenson’s 17 points powered Cal State Bakersfield past coach Vance Walberg’s Bulldogs, 74-56, in a nonconference game.

Stephenson also contributed nine rebounds for the Roadrunners (3-1). Jemel Jones scored 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting, and Marvin McGhee added nine points for CSUB.

Zaon Collins led the way for the Bulldogs (1-2) with 12 points but exited in the second half with an ankle injury. Elijah Price added 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and three blocks for Fresno State.

Cal State Bakersfield led Fresno State 38-33 at intermission only to bury the Bulldogs after Collins left the game. Jones scored 11 of his 13 points after the break for the Roadrunners.

Fresno State was outrebounded 51-27 — the largest disparity for the Bulldogs since being outrebounded by 25 against UT San Antonio in 2016.
