Arsen Tonoyan, 48, an Armenian national, was sentenced Monday to three years and five months in federal prison for assaulting an immigration detention officer at a facility in Kern County, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced in a news release.

Tonoyan, who had been living in Los Angeles, was charged with attacking the officer at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Golden State Annex detention center on March 7, 2022, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty on June 17, 2024.

Tonoyan approached the officer, struck him multiple times, placed him in a chokehold, and took him to the ground. The officer sustained a concussion, back injuries, and other injuries that required immediate medical attention.

In addition to his prison sentence, Tonoyan was ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Barton and Cody Chapple.
