A Vacaville Police Department motorcycle officer was killed in a collision Thursday morning while conducting a traffic stop, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Another vehicle struck officer Matthew Bowen from behind during the traffic stop. Bowen received medical aid on the scene and was transported to the hospital where he died.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Serena C.J. Rodriguez, 24, of Auburn, attempted to flee the scene on foot.

Bystanders who witnessed the crash detained Rodriguez until CHP officers arrived.

An investigation showed that Rodriguez was under the influence of drugs, authorities said. She was taken into custody and booked into Solano County Jail on charges of homicide and driving under the influence causing injury and/or death.

CHP said the investigation is ongoing.
