You may be missing out on money you’ve forgotten about. Now, there is an easy way for Fresno County residents to check online.

The Auditor-Controller/Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Department has created an unclaimed property lookup tool at the Fresno County website.

This is the link to access it.

The tool can be used to search for unclaimed checks that have been outstanding for six months or longer. When searching for a check, you must insert the time period it has been
missing. You then can filter the results by name.

Once a claim request has been made, further research will be conducted by county staff to ensure the check’s validity.

Before submitting a request, you need to contact the General Accounting team to receive instructions for the completion of specific forms. They can be reached at (559) 600-3609 or by email at ACTTC-GeneralAccounting@fresnocountyca.gov. They are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Check for Unclaimed Property With the State, Too

California law requires financial institutions, insurance companies, corporations, businesses, and others to submit their customers’ property to the State Controller’s Office when there has been no activity for at least three years.

This spring, the state controller’s office said that it was safeguarding nearly $12 billion in properties until the rightful owners were found.

Common types of unclaimed property include bank accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and safe deposit box contents.

In addition, the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators has a free, safe, and secure site the public can use. Click on it here.
