President Joe Biden’s approval ratings have taken a hit, with economic concerns being a major factor, according to a recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Over 40% of Americans are seriously worried about rising costs forcing them out of their communities. The economy and cost of living are considered the most pressing issues by 4 in 10 Americans, significantly more than any other issue.

The Democratic Party is not seen as the solution to these economic woes, with fewer Americans agreeing with their approach to the economy, crime, immigration, and America’s role in the world compared to the GOP. However, the Democrats do have an edge on issues such as abortion, climate change, and voting-related issues.

Biden’s approval rating has dropped from 45% at the start of the year to 37%, with 63% disapproving. This is the lowest approval rating he has had since taking office. However, it is still higher than former President Donald Trump’s lowest approval rating of 34%.

The majority of Americans, 71%, rate the country’s economic conditions as poor. This is an improvement from the summer of 2022 when 82% rated the economy as poor, but it is still far worse than pre-pandemic assessments.

Americans’ views align more closely with the Republican Party on economic issues, crime and policing, immigration, and America’s role in world affairs. However, they side with the Democrats on issues such as abortion, climate change, voting rights and election integrity, and education.

Economic concerns are a major worry for many Americans, both nationally and locally. 84% are at least somewhat worried about the state of the economy in their community, and 74% are worried that rising costs will force them out of their community.

Crime is also a significant concern, with 72% of Americans at least somewhat worried about the risk of crime in their community. Proposals to reduce crime such as increasing police patrols, increasing police funding, enacting stricter sentencing laws for property crime, and increasing funding for local social services and anti-poverty programs are supported by roughly two-thirds of the public.

The poll was conducted from November 1-30 among a random national sample of 1,795 adults. The margin of sampling error for the full sample is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
