Law enforcement agencies are urging iPhone users to exercise caution following the introduction of a new feature in the iOS 17 update. The “NameDrop” feature, which is automatically activated with the update, allows users to share their contact details with another iPhone or Apple Watch by holding the devices close together.

The Middletown Division of Police in Ohio and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan have both issued warnings about the feature. They stress that while users can choose to share or receive information, or cancel the transfer, many people may not be aware of how the feature works or how to disable it.

Apple has clarified that NameDrop is designed for sharing new information, not updating existing contacts. To disable the feature, users can navigate to “Settings”, select “General”, then “AirDrop”, and switch off the “Bringing Devices Together” option.
