Ed Madec, the highly successful Fresno City College men’s basketball who was placed on administrative leave in early 2020, was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to shoot college officials and students, police said on Monday.
A “Timely Warning” issued by the State Center Community College District provides a chronology of allegations and events involving Madec, who led the Rams to a 397-70 record and two state titles during his 14 seasons as coach.
Though no longer the college’s basketball coach, Madec, 51, remains an instructor there and allegedly made his shooting threat while teaching a morning class on Aug. 15.
Madec subsequently was placed on administrative leave and then arrested Friday afternoon in Merced County. According to State Center police, Madec was booked into Fresno County Jail and has since posted bail.
A Ramey warrant for his arrest stated that Madec said the bullet points on his classroom PowerPoint presentation were bullets “flying” toward his students. The warrant also stated that Madec threatened to shoot and kill State Center Chancellor Dr. Carole Goldsmith.
In addition, the warrant said that several students reported Madec as saying he had a firearm.
A Ramey warrant is an arrest warrant issued by a judge or magistrate before a prosecutor has filed charges.
Police Warn Students, Staff Not to Confront Madec
State Center police on Monday issued this advisory:
“With Mr. Madec’s release and with the gravity of the threats he allegedly made, the SCCCD Police Department is deeply concerned that the alleged suspect may pose a serious and ongoing threat to Fresno City College students and staff.
“If you encounter Edward Madec on the FCC campus, we strongly urge you not to confront him. Instead, please call SCCCD PD immediately at (559) 244-6140, or dial 9-1-1 to report his presence and let law enforcement handle the situation. Your safety and that of the college community are of paramount importance.”
Briefly Coached at Buchanan High School in 2022
Fresno CC removed Madec as coach over alleged benefits violations in the men’s basketball program. Madec then initiated a legal case to get his coaching job back.
In the summer of 2022, Madec became the boys’ basketball coach at Buchanan High School. However, he resigned after just eight games, reportedly to spend more time with his family.
