In July, Netflix began airing  a documentary about the James Webb Space Telescope titled “Unknown: Cosmic Time Machine.”

Now, in a bit of serendipity to kick off its 87th year, the San Joaquin Valley Town Hall lecture series has landed a woman who knows as much about the telescope as anyone.

Dr. Amber Straughn, who is a NASA astrophysicist and deputy project scientist for James Webb Space Telescope Science Communications, will speak at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Fresno’s William Saroyan Theatre.

Her topic: “Unfolding the Universe with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.”

About Amber Straughn

Straughn grew up in the small farming town of Bee Branch, Arkansas, where her fascination with astronomy began under beautifully dark, rural skies. She obtained her B.S. in Physics at the University of Arkansas in 2002 and completed her M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics at Arizona State University in 2008.

Straughn has been at  NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center since 2008. Her research focuses on interacting and star-forming galaxies in the context of galaxy assembly, where she uses imaging and infrared spectroscopic data mostly from the Hubble Space Telescope.

GV Wire is a sponsor of Town Hall.
