A homeless man was charged with elder abuse after he was caught on camera smacking a 72-year-old lady outside a grocery store in Hayward, California.
The woman was just walking into “Seafood City” carrying a big box when Steve Karanja, 25, came up and assaulted her for no apparent reason. She fell and hurt her back on the concrete curb.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 21.
Though Karanja was initially arrested for both elder abuse and a hate crime, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office didn’t charge him with a hate crime.

The police showed up and found her on the ground. Karanja had already run off, but the whole thing was caught on video and the police recognized him from other incidents.
