Tioga Road, which is the extension of Highway 120 through Yosemite National Park, is opening up for cars at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

There won’t be water, food, services, or fuel available, but there will be portable toilets. Make sure you pack enough food and water for your trip. The visitor center and wilderness center in Tuolumne Meadows will be open though.

It’s the latest Tioga Road opening since the park commenced the route in July 1915 and comes after Yosemite’s snowiest winter on record.

Bicyclists are allowed to hit Tioga Road today. Just remember to obey the traffic light just east of Olmsted Point for your own safety.

The road’s a bit damaged in places, so expect some one-lane traffic and possible delays of up to 15 minutes, especially just east of Olmsted Point.

No word yet on when Tamarack Flat or Porcupine Flat Campground will be open. And, other campgrounds on Tioga Road won’t be opening at all this year, the National Park Service says.

It’s still pretty snowy up there. Some meadows and trails are flooded, and there’s snow in shady areas as low as 8,000 feet — along with a lot more at 9,000 feet. Stick to the trails to avoid damaging plants and be ready for wet feet. Some trails might be tough to follow, so bring a GPS, map, and compass (and know how to use them).
