After more than three days of deliberations, a Superior Court jury ordered Fresno County to pay a Fresno family $800,000 in damages on Wednesday.
The jury of seven men and five women found that sheriff’s deputies violated the civil rights of family members and had no justification for killing their beloved dog Scooby in June 2018.
The county also will be on the hook for the family’s attorney fees. Fresno lawyers Nolan Kane and Warren Paboojian represented Veronica Ordaz Gonzalez and other family members.
Before the trial, the county had offered $7,500 to settle the case.
