Fresno County says the name of a foothills community is Squaw Valley. The federal government says its Yokuts Valley.
The federal and state governments have banned the “squaw” term, citing its sexist and racist history. The county fired back by filing a lawsuit against the state law.
Local TV stations are mixed in how they refer to the town.
The name often appears in weather updates, usually on a map or in a crawl at the bottom of the screen.
ABC 30 News Director Martin Ortiz says his station is following the federal government’s decision to recognize the name as Yokuts Valley.
KSEE 24 still lists Squaw Valley. The station did not respond to Media Man’s questions as to why.
And KMPH Fox 26 News Director Jim Jakobs says the name isn’t in the station’s weather graphics either way.
Greenwald Will Call Games in Winnipeg
Doug Greenwald will be calling baseball games for the 2023 season … in Canada.
Greenwald, the longtime Fresno Grizzlies broadcaster, will be radio voice for the Winnipeg Goldeyes, a team in the 12-club independent American Association — considered a partner league with Major League Baseball.
The team hired him to broadcast games on CJNU (93.7 FM).
For the last 20 years, Greenwald was voice of the Fresno Grizzlies and occasionally filled-in with the San Francisco Giants.
The Grizzlies and Greenwald parted ways this off-season. The club has not announced their 2023 broadcast plans. Fewer games in recent years have aired on terrestrial radio, in favor of online broadcasts.
Previous announcing stops for Greenwald, the son of former Giants broadcaster Hank Greenwald, included Burlington, Iowa; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Modesto. He currently calls games for UC Davis women’s basketball.
“I’m excited and thankful to join the Goldeyes! Owner Sam Katz and general manager Andrew Collier are beyond welcoming. For 30 years, Winnipeg continues to be the hallmark of the MLB Partnership group,” Greenwald texted Media Man.
The team is happy to have him.
“Doug Greenwald’s career in professional baseball is in a category well beyond what you would normally see in the MLB Partner Leagues,” owner Katz said. “Sometimes you need to go after the ‘big fish’ and the Goldeyes are very fortunate to have Doug Greenwald doing play-by-play this season. After talking to Doug on many occasions it became very clear that he lives, eats, and breathes baseball.”
Greenwald replaces Steve Schuster, who left for a non-broadcast job with the New York Mets.

Work at ABC 30. It Pays Better.
ABC 30 posted job listings for two on-air positions — an anchor reporter, and a reporter. The pay range for both at the Disney/ABC-owned station is between $60,000-$75,000 a year.
Compare that to existing job listing for similar jobs at Nexstar-owned KSEE-24/CBS 47. Postings for a news reporter, and a news reporter/fill-in anchor position pays $20.67 an hour, or $43,000 a year.
KMPH Weather Anchor Expecting
If KMPH Fox 26 weather anchor Christina Lopez looked different, it’s because she is. Lopez announced on the air that she and her husband are expecting their second child in the summer, a girl.
Congrats to Lopez and her family.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: There’s a special reason why the forecast has been a bit bumpy lately.
