The Fresno Police Department cited 40 drivers and 25 bicyclists and pedestrians on Friday during a 10-hour traffic safety operation, the department announced Tuesday.

The drivers were cited for failure to yield to another vehicle at an intersection, unsafe speed, driving a motor vehicle while holding and operating a cellphone, unsafe turning, and failing to stop for a red light. Two drivers also were arrested for driving while under the influence.

Sgt. Diana Trueba-Vega said no information was available about the citations handed out to the bicyclists and pedestrians.

The operation was conducted citywide and was the first of two. The second will be on Saturday.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
