Victor Cardenas, 29, of Fresno died late Wednesday night in an accident caused by a drunk driver who police say drove through a red light at Shields Avenue and Fresno Street.
Cardenas’ identity was released to the media Thursday evening.
According to police, Andrew Calderon, 40, of Fresno initially cooperated with officers after they conducted a traffic stop for non-moving traffic violations at Shields and First Avenue.
Suspect Flees Traffic Stop
But he suddenly drove away at a high rate of speed. Calderon, who is on parole for felony domestic violence, had a no-bail parole warrant for his arrest, police said.
Officers initially pursued Calderon, who was driving a Chevy Tahoe, before deciding to pull back.
Calderon continued at a high speed anyway, ran the red light, and collided with Cardenas, who was driving a Chevy Cruze, police said. Cardenas was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
Calderon in Hospital, Faces Felony Charges
EMS also transported Calderon to CRMC, where he is in critical condition. He will be charged with several felonies, including DUI resulting in death and vehicular manslaughter, police said.
