Even though Republicans now control the House, Fresno Democrat Jim Costa will serve on two of his preferred committees in the 118th Congress.

Costa said Tuesday afternoon that he will be a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee.

In addition, Costa was appointed to Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries, a subcommittee of the Natural Resources Committee.

“As a senior member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I will continue to do all I can to fix our broken water system, protect our public lands, and safeguard our energy security for the future,” said Costa in a news release.

Costa has served on the committee since he joined the House in 2005.

Costa Will Have a Voice in Farm Bill

Regarding his appointment to the ag committee, Costa said: “I look forward to working across the aisle to craft the upcoming farm bill, leading the charge to fight hunger, and delivering results for farmers, small businesses, and rural America.”

This will be the fourth farm bill that Costa has participated in drafting. The farm bill has a broader sweep than its name implies. The legislative package also involves biotechnology, nutrition, and broadband, and is important to America’s rural communities.

On Monday, Rep. David Valado (R-Hanford) announced that he will serve on two of the most powerful committees in the House — appropriations and budget.
