Eva Dolores Romero, 55, of Fresno, pleaded guilty on Friday to a felony drug trafficking charge involving her jailed son, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced in a news release.
According to court documents, while Romero’s son was a Fresno County Jail inmate, she conspired with him and others outside of jail to smuggle methamphetamine and heroin into the jail for distribution among inmates.
Romero got caught when law enforcement agents reviewed recorded jail calls and learned about a smuggling set for Jan. 26 of last year. On that day, agents intercepted a person trying to deliver narcotics hidden in athletic shoes to the jail.
Romero is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 18, 2022, by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston. Romero faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Gilio is prosecuting the case, which was assembled by Homeland Security Investigations, the DEA, Fresno police, and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
