Most Fresno Pacific University classes will be online only starting Wednesday and continuing through Feb. 4, the university announced Tuesday.

Faculty had been asked earlier this month to prepare for online lessons again in the event that the coronavirus surge reoccurred, as it has with the omicron variant.

In an early afternoon email to students, faculty, and staff, President Joseph Jones says the Valley’s surge of infection cases has been mirrored at the university.

“We recognize that moving classes to a virtual format is not easily done by faculty or students and this decision was not taken lightly,” Jones said in a news release. “However, over the past week in particular, FPU has seen increases in positive tests among students, faculty and staff that impact instructional delivery and other functions on the main and at some regional campuses.”

Lab classes will continue to meet in person, and students who live on campus may continue to do so. The main campus facilities such as the dining hall, Steiner Campus Center Lounge, Hiebert Library, and the Academic Support Center will remain open.

Anyone who comes to any of the university’s five campuses must wear a mask and maintain a social distance indoors, unless they are in their private office or residence.
