When Huell Howser died in 2013, California lost a one-in-a-million icon.

But reporter John Bartell of Sacramento’s ABC10 carries forward Howser’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and story-telling.

Over the last three years, he has visited the kind of unusual attractions that Howser loved for his “Bartell’s Backroads” series.

Whether your passion is antique tools, the history of reform schools, Bigfoot, or country and western music’s Bakersfield Sound, you can find something to like in a collection of Bartell’s travelogues at this link.

Or, you can check out his “Ultimate 58 County Road Trip of California” from YouTube below.

Anyone wishing to spend time again with Howser can visit the video archive hosted by Chapman University. It’s at this link.
