Clogged CA Ports Get $5B for Upgrades. But Have Unions Taken 'Automation' Off the Table?

Not content to wait for Congress to pass a big infrastructure spending bill, Gov. Gavin Newsom and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg moved on Thursday to inject $5 billion in loan money to help modernize California’s seaports.

The money won’t help unclog the severe congestion that’s currently creating chaos, but the two say that modernizing the ports and the truck and rail systems that serve them can prevent future logistics nightmares.

One word that was not mentioned in Thursday’s announcement is “automation” at the ports, which is a contentious topic in California. The union representing port workers has been fighting it for decades.
