West Nile mosquitoes have been found in the city of Fresno, county health department officials said Friday afternoon.
“This confirmation is a strong reminder that everyone should take this disease seriously and should take every precaution to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites,” said Dr. Rais Vohra, the interim health officer for Fresno County.
The West Nile virus can lead to death in humans and animals. Virus transmission occurs when infected mosquitoes feed on animals, as well as humans, after having fed on infected birds.
Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District said it collected the positive mosquitoes in the 93727 zip code, which covers the Fresno Yosemite International Airport and Sunnyside areas.
Protect Yourself and Your Family
Health officials recommend that residents contact their local mosquito control district regarding standing water, mosquito problems, or neglected swimming pools. Neglected pools are a major source of mosquito production.
You can protect against mosquito bites and the West Nile virus with these “Three Ds”:
- DETER – Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 according to label instructions. However, insect repellents should not be used on children under 2 months old.
- DAWN AND DUSK – Mosquitoes usually bite in the early morning and evening, so wear proper clothing and repellent when outside at these times. Repair or replace window screens that have tears or holes.
- DRAIN – Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, by emptying flower pots, old car tires, buckets, and other containers.
