Fresno County has verified nearly 59,000 signatures on the recall petition of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
James Kus, the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters, said that is a verification rate of 77.4% of 76,193 signatures received.
“We are currently completing a secondary review of all invalid signatures and anticipate all activities to be complete by the end of (this) week,” Kus said.
Recall proponents said they collected more than 2 million signatures that are currently being counted by the state’s 58 county clerks. The counties have until April 29 to verify signatures. If 1,495,709 signatures are verified, the recall election will take place, likely in October or November.
There are still plenty of steps before setting an election date. Signers of the petition have 30 business days to withdraw. If there are still enough signatures, the Joint Legislative Budget Committee has 30 days to review them.
After that, the Secretary of State would certify to the Lieutenant Governor the number of signatures required for the election. Then, the election would be scheduled within 60 to 80 days.
