The deadliest areas to be a pedestrian have been identified for this year’s “Dangerous By Design” study, and the list includes Fresno and Bakersfield.
Bakersfield ranked Number 2 on the list with 260 deaths from 2010 through 2019, resulting in an danger index rating of 293.
The city of Fresno’s 235 pedestrian deaths during that time period equates to 2.4 annual pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people and a Pedestrian Danger Index of 149.4.
That landed Fresno at Number 21 in the study’s rankings.
Another California city that made the list was Stockton-Lodi, ranked No. 15 with 187 deaths and an index of 168.
“No one is doing well,” said Rayla Bellis, a program manager at Smart Growth America and one of the primary authors of the study.
“Just because a place doesn’t rise to the top 20 list doesn’t mean they aren’t seeing these tragedies occur in their communities, Bellis said. “Most places are doing worse since the last edition of this report [2019].”
