A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.

One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.

Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday
