Fresno City Councilwoman Esmeralda Soria announced on Monday that she is self-quarantining after testing positive for COVID-19.

“It gives me great sadness to share the news that no one during this pandemic wants to hear, I recently tested positive for Covid19,” Soria announced Monday evening on her Facebook page.

Soria said she received her test results on Monday. She was unsure when she may have contracted the virus, but said she tested negative last Tuesday.

“I’m doing ok, mild symptoms,” Soria said.

She said she shared the information publicly “because there’s still a tremendous amount of stigma behind this virus. It is important that we are all transparent and responsible if we are positive or get exposed to someone that is positive.”

Fiancé Also Tests Positive

Soria’s fiancé, Fresno developer Terance Frazier, also announced he tested positive.

“Today, Esmeralda and I received the news that we are both COVID-19 positive. We are both in quarantine and following the doctor’s orders. I’m experiencing some symptoms but hoping we get through it soon,” Frazier told GV Wire℠.

Soria said she spent Thanksgiving with Frazier and his children.

Soria is Strong COVID Relief Advocate

Soria has been a strong supporter of COVID-19 relief efforts, including housing grants, business grants and hosting several food distribution and testing events.

She did not attend a food distribution event sponsored by her office on Monday nor a testing event on Saturday.

Soria plans to participate in Tuesday’s special City Council meeting. The council has been meeting virtually since Nov. 19.

Latest Elected Leader to Test Positive

Soria becomes the latest local leader who has revealed a positive test. Last month, Fresno County Supervisor Steve Brandau and Fresno Mayor-elect Jerry Dyer tested positive. Both attended an Election Night watch party where one other person — Granville Homes CEO and GV Wire publisher Darius Assemi — is known to have tested positive.
